Yet another classic fairy tale adaptation for your delectation. Feast your eyes on Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Starring Jeremy Renner (The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy) as Hansel and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Clash of the Titans) as his sister Gretel, this film provides a modern twist on the classic tale.
It is fifteen years since the witch lured the siblings into her home to eat them. The pair narrowly escaped the gingerbread house with their lives. Now they are a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches around the globe. Currently scheduled for a January 2013 release, I give you Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters:
Hansel and Gretel follows close on the heels of that other genre mash flick Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which received mixed reviews. Expect lots of gory violence and preposterous storytelling.
And if you can't wait that long for your fairy tale fix, don't forget that Philip Pullman's Grimm Tales, a distillation of a select number of the classic tales which I discuss here, is due out at the end of the month.
UPDATE: Over at her wonderful blog Breezes from Wonderland Maria Tatar discusses another new take on the Hansel and Gretel story. In Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel and the 420 Witch, the children are lured into the witch's home with the promise of marijuana. See the trailer here:
